Occupational therapy's main goal is to improve health and quality of life through facilitating participation and engagement in occupations.  Occupations are the meaningful, necessary, and familiar activities of everyday life.  In other words, occupational therapist help people do the things that they need and want to do.  It is important that the individual, as well as  each occupation/activity, are examined in the context/environment in which they occur.

Examples of Childhood Occupations

* Playing

* Learning

* Socializing

* Eating

* Going to School

* Getting Dressed

* Participating in family routines

Why Play?

Play is the most important area of occupation for all children.  Through play and exploration, children learn about their world.  They learn how to interact with others, learn  properties such as hot/cold, rough/smooth, square/circle etc...  Like adults, if children are not motivated to do things, it is harder for them to learn.  Through play, children can find motivation to learn new skills that they may otherwise not be motivated to try.  With these key ideas in mind, I will always try to find ways to incorporate learning that is motivating for kids.
